I often find myself thinking why the hell am I not living in a smaller city or town, where I could work a true 9-5 and possibly have a life. But it doesn't take long for New York to remind me that I live in a place where a normal Tuesday can turn into a day I will likely not forget about.
I had tried to attend a Lou and Grey x OKREAL creative talk session in the past and failed miserably. Due to the nature of advertising, and the extreme difficulties it poses to get anywhere on time during the work week, I was beyond happy for making it to this month's talk (dare I say 30 mins before it started, who am I?) with the founders of the ice cream company, Coolhaus, a gourmet ice cream sandwiches company inspired in architecture.
To be completely honest, I hadn't done much research on them, but once I saw the event on twitter I immediately rsvp’d. I've had wonderful experiences in the past with events like this one, and I was certainly not disappointed with this one either.
Not only are both of the founders, Freya and Natasha, refreshingly relatable, but they are also a couple! Which to be honest made it even more interesting since it is one thing to be an entrepreneur, but doing it with your partner is not a piece of cake, or well, an ice cream sandwich (see what I did there?). There was so much wisdom instilled during this women-centric event. Starting with the notion that you have to be crazy to actually make your entrepreneurial dreams come true, to the powerful fact that most “No’s” just mean “not yet.” A “no” often means you have to routinely check in, keep turning in ideas and working so that some negative answers become powerful yeses that can change your project and your life.
Personally, what I loved the most was seeing how these two women helped normalized having a baby. This wasn't the regular story of how the baby changed absolutely everything or how the Mom just “made it all happen,” but rather a testament to partnership and also believing that a baby doesn't mean the end of your business. That you can also make your baby's schedules and needs work around your projects and passions, and vice-versa.
I am never shy to raise my hand when the questions section comes up, but lately, rather than only asking a question I am now prefacing it with a thank you.
During a time where being a women, let a alone a woman of color or part of a ‘minority’, seems to be an act of defiance, we must take it upon ourselves to thank any and all women doing neat stuff. Loving ourselves and our work enough to be compelled to start a business and make it a way of life is insanely difficult and meaningful, and I certainly love seeing more and more women doing so.
I suggest you start following OKREAL and Lou and Grey so you don't miss the next events. These collaborative events are completely free and a great opportunity to learn, mingle and recharge your creative batteries.
No es raro que me encuentre pensando por qué no se me ha ocurrido mudarme a una ciudad o un pueblo pequeño, donde tal vez pueda tener un trabajo que solo dure de las 9 a las 5 y pueda tener una vida. Pero no pasa mucho tiempo para que Nueva York me enseñe como un Martes cualquiera se puede volver en un día único y especial.
Ya había tratado de ir a una de las charlas creativas de Lou and Grey x OKREAL anteriormente, pero por la naturaleza de mi trabajo en la publicidad casi nunca puedo llegar a eventos durante la semana, así que estaba super emocionada de poder asistir (¡y llegar temprano!) a la charla de este mes con la compañía de sandwich de helados inspirados en arquitectura, Coolhause.
Para ser completamente honesta, no había investigado mucho acerca de la compañía pero una vez que vi el evento en Twitter sabía que me tenía que anotar. Nunca he tenido malas experiencias en este tipo de eventos y este definitivamente no decepcionó en lo absoluto.
Las fundadoras de Coolhause, Freya y Natasha, no solo son super humildes sino que también son una pareja, lo cual para mí hizo todo aún más interesante. Ser unx empredendorx es ya difícil, pero hacerlo con una pareja no es nada fácil. Hubo tantas buenas lecciones en esta conversación entre mujeres. Desde con el entendimiento de que ser unx emprendedxr es tener una buena dosis de locura en nosotrxs, hasta la lección de que la mayoría de los “no” que recibimos generalmente significan “todavía no”. Estos solo significan que hay que seguir tratando, ofreciendo nuevas ideas y nunca rendirse hasta que esos “no” se puedan convertir en my poderosos “sí” que pueden cambiar tu proyecto y tu vida.
Personalmente, una de las cosas que amé más de esta conversación fue ver como estas dos mujeres ayudaban a normalizar lo que es tener un bebé recién nacido y continuar con sus labores y pasiones. Su historia no era la típica de cómo la criatura había cambiado todo en la casa o como la madre hacía “todo posible,” sino más bien un testamento de complicidad y apoyo mutuo con el entendimiento de que un bebé también puede adaptarse a nuestras vidas y proyectos, y viceversa.
Yo soy de las que no tienen verguenza para levantar la mano durante la ronda de preguntas, pero últimamente en vez de solo hacer mi pregunta, estoy comenzando con dar las gracias.
En estos tiempos en los que vivimos en el que ser mujer, y más que nada una mujer de color o parte de una minoría parece ser un acto de rebeldía, debemos de recordarnos de alentar y darle ánimo a todas las mujeres haciendo un buen trabajo. Querernos y confiar lo suficiente en nosotrxs como para comenzar un negocio es increíblemente difícil y me fascina ver a más y más mujeres hacerlo.
Te sugiero que sigas a OKREAL y Lou and Grey para que no te pierdas ninguno de los eventos. Todos los eventos con ambas compañías son gratis y una tremenda oportunidad para aprender, conocer a nuevas personas y recargar tus pilas creativas.
