Nani Girl

Friday April 21st didn't quite start like a normal week day. There had been a power outage early in the morning so the commute to work was quite eventful to say the least. I went about my day like any other Friday, but as me and Chandler were walking to have dinner we received a call from a friend about a dog that desperately needed a foster home. We looked at each other and said, well, technically we can do it, right? I immediately got in touch with the person looking after the dog, and once we learned they were walking distance from our place there was no turning back.

Nani, a 13 year old Bull Terrier, had lost her owner a couple of days before and had stayed at the apartment all by herself until help arrived. This kind of story is not unheard of, especially in New York City, but it was still heart breaking.

I will forever remember locking eyes with Chandler as we go up the elevator where she lived and saying to each other “Are we really doing this!? We know nothing about this dog!” But looking back now, I can't imagine my life without knowing her.

Without knowing if we would keep her or not, we resolved to nurse her back to better health and spirits until we could figure out next steps. Despite going through an incredibly dramatic experience, with us not entirely knowing what we were doing and the dog only knowing us for less than a day, Nani trusted us and, in return, she forever changed me.

In just a short week, Nani helped me reevaluate my priorities. She reminded me that everything that is worth it in life is incredibly scary but we should still do it, and she even helped me see a side of my partner I hadn't really seen before, and for all these reasons and more I will forever be grateful.

My only regret is not meeting Nani a couple years later, when maybe our lives and schedules would allow for us to keep her, but I highly doubt this was a coincidence. She needed to come into our lives exactly when she did, and although it partially destroyed me to see her go to a wonderful family, I sort of feel she fulfilled her purpose in my life.

If you have the time, flexibility and means to adopt a dog, which should not be taken lightly, please consider a senior dog. Not only do they need our love and attention, but the kindness and compassion these older souls are able to provide is something we can’t ever repay them.

Until next time, Nani girl.
