Biking from Brooklyn to the Bronx
Pedaleando Desde Brooklyn Hasta el Bronx
One of the things I like the most about New York is that there is always, and I mean always, something new to do.
Even though I have been living in the city for four years now, there are just so many places, lots of them very iconic ones, that I haven’t been to. So when Chan told me Get Up and Ride was doing their first ever trip from their office in Brooklyn to the Bronx I knew this would be a nice chance to clear my head and see parts of the city that you either pass by on the subway or you never really have a reason to go to since you don't know the area.
We picked up the bikes at Get Up and Ride South Williamsburg, Brooklyn to then bike to Long Island City to John Brown BBQ and have a quick and, to be honest very heavy but delicious lunch. It consisted of a huge serving of pulled pork, homemade BBQ sauces, cornbread and a very cheesy mac and cheese. I will admit I ate more than I should have for biking later, but oh well.
We then headed towards the Triboro Bridge. We crossed the bridge from Queens through Randalls Island, one of my favorite parts of the trip, to then continue our trip to the Bronx. The view from the bridge is beautiful to say the least, and because the day was absolutely gorgeous I was able to snap some great pics.
We ended the biking trip at the Bronx Brewery, a relatively new very cool brewery and space hidden in the industrial area of the borough. The Pale Ale, their most popular beer, is such a treat, and they even have a nice patio area in the back where you can play board games and catch some sun.
Once the tour was over we headed to a distillery we bumped into on our way to the brewery, Port Morris. It turns out the company is owned by a Puerto Rican-Dominican couple and family, and they are making some pretty serious “moon shines”, also known as rums back home. They have a super cute bar area, and a pretty big event space they can rent out for events. They gave us a quick tour, which they offer for free in both in English and Spanish, and we got to try some of their products.
If you can finish reading this post knowing something other than New York is probably the best idea ever during the summer, is that Port Morris makes a “Coquito” version of their rum without the milk. They let the rum sit with pieces of coconut and cinnamon, and it tastes just like the Coquito you would try from a true Puerto Rican. Mix it with a pineapple juice and you’d like to spend the rest of your life by the beach drinking this drink.
I'd say it is always good to invest money in experiences like biking around the city and/or quality guided tours. Not only are you probably going places you have never been to and learning something new, but most likely you will meet people and feel great about being outside while the weather permits. Also, remember to support the Latino businesses like Port Morris, because they are people making very high quality yet traditional products and we need more success stories like them.
Una de las cosas que más me gusta de Nueva York es que siempre, y digo siempre, hay algo nuevo para hacer.
Aunque he vivido en la ciudad ya por 4 años, hay tantos lugares para conocer, muchos de ellos icónicos, que no he visitado. Así que cuando Chan me dijo que Get Up and Ride iba a hacer el primer viaje en bicicleta desde el Brooklyn hasta el Bronx, sabía que era mi oportunidad de despejar la mente y ver partes de la ciudad que uno pasa en el tren y no tiene la oportunidad de ver o que simplemente no tienes una razón para ir ya que no las conoces.
Buscamos las bicicletas en la oficina de Get Up and Ride en el sur de Williamsburg, Brooklyn y comenzamos a pedalear hasta Long Island City, Queens a John Brown BBQ donde comimos un buenísimo, pero para serles honestos pesado, almuerzo con mucho puerco desmenuzado, salsas de barbacoas caseras, pan de maíz y unos macarrones con queso. Debo de admitir que comí mucho más de lo que debía para luego montar bicicletas, pero bueno, que más da.
Desde allí comenzamos a pedalear hacia el puente Triboro. Cruzamos el mismo desde Queens a través de Randalls Island, una de mis partes favoritas del viaje, para luego continuar hacia el Bronx. La vista desde el puente es hermosísima y como el día estaba espectacular pude tomar unas buenas fotos.
Terminamos el viaje en la Bronx Brewery (Cervecería), una compañía relativamente nueva en un lugar escondido en un área industrial. Su cerveza Pale Ale, la más popular, es todo un gusto al paladar e incluso tienen una pequeña terraza en la parte trasera donde puedes jugar juegos de mesa y disfrutar de un poco de sol.
Una vez que el tour de la cervecería se había terminado nos dirigimos a Port Morris, una destilería con la que nos encontramos en el camino hacia la cervecería. Resulta que los dueños de la compañía son una pareja Dominico-Puertoriqueña y tienen unos increíbles "moon shines" también conocidos como ron para nosotros en RD. Tienen una área de bar súper coqueta y un súper espacioso lugar de eventos que rentan al público. Nos dieron un pequeño tour, los cuales son gratis y pueden ser tanto en Español como en Inglés, y probamos las diferentes variantes de sus productos.
Si puedes terminar de leer este post sabiendo algo más de que Nueva York es probablemente la mejor idea que puedes tener durante el verano, es que Port Morris hace una versión del famoso "Coquito" puertorriqueño sin leche. Ellos dejan que el ron absorba el sabor de pedazos de coco y canela y sabe idéntico al sabroso trago que probablemente has probado anteriormente. Combínalo con un poco de jugo de piña y vas a querer pasarte tu vida al lado de una playa bebiendo este trago.
Puedo decir con seguridad que siempre es bueno invertir en experiencias como montar bicicleta por la ciudad o otros tours de calidad. No solamente irás a lugares que probablemente no conocerías y aprenderás algo nuevo, pero también conocerás nuevas personas y te sentirás muy bien de haber disfrutado del buen clima mientras dura. También recuerden apoyar a los negocios latinos como Port Morris, ya que hay mucha de nuestra gente haciendo productos de muy buena calidad y necesitamos más historias de éxito como ellos.
