Weekend Hangs: 181st Street, The Heights
After living in this city for six years now I can confidently tell you one thing, not that many people really know the Heights. Other than the Cloisters, which by the way are absolutely a New York must-visit, most of my coworkers and people I meet around town don’t come up here, even though we are literally still in Manhattan.
I am not going to lie, there are parts of the Heights that are not that cool - but for the most part, I can confidently tell you if you haven’t been up here yet, you are missing out.
In this edition of Weekend Hangs, a new series focused on places that are great to visit when you have some time in your hands to walk around and actually take it all in - hence the ‘weekend’ part - I bring you to 181st Street. A street so busy and even controversial you sometimes won’t believe your eyes.
Luego de haber vivido por casi seis años en esta ciudad puedo decirte esto con bastante confianza: No mucha gente conoce Washington Heights bien. Quitando los Cloisters de la ecuación, el cual es un lugar que todo el que vive aquí tiene que visitar, casi ninguno de mis compañeros de trabajo y la gente que conozco downtown viene a esta área, aunque literalmente todavía estamos en Manhattan.
No te voy a mentir y a decirte que hay partes del alto Manhattan que no son tan chéveres, pero la mayoría de veces puedo decirte que si no has venido a darte un paseo por aquí te estás perdiendo de mucho.
En esta edición de Weekend Hangs, una nueva serie de lugares que son geniales para visitar cuando tienes un poco más de tiempo en tus manos - por eso lleva fines de semana en el título - te traigo a la calle 181. Una calle super movida y hasta controversial que a veces no vas a creer lo que ves. ¡Vamo’ arriba!

This Goodwill can have anything from really cool glass jars for flowers to Japanese vintage coats. Like most Goodwill stores, it requires some browsing to find the really good stuff, but trust me, there are brilliant pieces in here waiting for you to find them.

En este Goodwill puedes encontrar de todo desde floreros y piezas para tu casa hasta abrigos Japoneses. Como toda tienda Goodwill, encontrar piezas que de verdad valen la pena toma tiempo, pero creeme cuando te digo que hay mucho que espera ser descubierto en este lugar.

This ramen popped up a while ago and although I find some of their ramen a bit too salty, there is always people eating here. Oh and PS - they don’t only serve ramen.
Este restaurante de ramen llegó al vecindario hace un tiempo ya y aunque personalmente encuentro su ramen un poco muy salado para mi gusto, el lugar siempre está lleno. Oh y vale la pena mencionar que no sólo sirven ramen.
The magnificent George Washington Bridge. How could you not find this beautiful? I also find it quite charming how the mere sight of this bridge, even from downtown, reminds me I’m home.
El magnífico puente de George Washington. ¿Cómo no encontrarselo hermoso? También me parece encantador como un solo vistazo a este puente, incluso desde downtown, me hace sentir en casa.
My favorite part about this section of 181st is that it very much feels like a neighborhood. It’s quiet, communal and filled with dogs. Seriously, I regularly feel like I might be the only human without a dog around here. It’s a sad life, I know.
So the next time you feel like you want to get to know the city better hop on the A train and give this charming area try. Be prepared to hear a lot of Spanish and perhaps a complete different (or very familiar?) view of the city, but isn’t that what makes this place so special?
Esta es mi parte favorita de la calle ya que se siente como un vecindario. Es súper callado y residencial, y está llenito de perros. Te lo juro, usualmente creo que soy la única persona sin uno cuando ando por aquí. Es una vista un poco triste, lo sé.
Así que la próxima vez que tengas ganas de conocer un poco más de Manhattan, toma el tren A y date un paseito por (un poco) de Washington Heights. Ven preparad@ para escuchar mucho español y encontrarte con un área bastante diferente (¿o familiar?) del resto de la ciudad, aunque es justo decir que lugares como este es lo que hacen de esta ciudad tan fascinante, ¿verdad?
