Diana Pou on Becoming an Actress and Having the Courage to Follow Your Passion

Tells us a little bit about yourself!
My name is Diana Carolina Pou Ortíz, and I am a New York based singer, actress, dancer & Musician born in the Dominican Republic.
I attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, where I received a certificate in their Integrated Program, the William Esper Studio, where I spent two years on their Professional Actor Training Program and also Steps On Broadway for their Independent Study Program.
I love outdoor places like the beach and the park, and anything that powers my spirit, which normally includes long walks, fresh air, yoga, theater, and art, just to mention a few. Lately I've been very inclined to try more intense activities, like boxing, fencing and hiking. I've always wanted to be part of an action movie because I secretly have a huge passion for weapons.
Where do you think your love for acting and singing comes from?
Ever since I was a little girl my mom knew I was meant for the artistic field.
One year, for Christmas my grandfather gave me a toy piano, and I carried it with me 24/7. I even slept with the piano like a teddy bear, so it was pretty obvious that music was part of my essence since my earliest years. My mom used to sing me lullabies before I went to sleep, and my dad used to love to sing old boleros at all of our family gatherings. Music was definitely already in my blood.
I started taking piano and singing lessons at the age of 6 at the Elementary Music School of Elila Mena School, to then continue at the National Conservatory of Music in the Dominican Republic. Acting, on the other hand, came a little later in life. I was 17 years old when I was cast for the leading role of Gabriella Montez in Nuryn Sanlley’s production of "High School Musical On Stage", where I realized just how much I loved singing and acting. Right after that, I moved to New York City in 2008 to fully pursue my dreams and here I am: Loving my career more each day!
What is the most challenging and the most rewarding part of your job?
The most challenging part of my job is the long wait to actually be discovered or appreciated as an artist. It's a really tough career and there's a lot of competition, so you have to really love it and be extra patient. You have to constantly audition and always give it your best no matter what. But once you get noticed or get cast in a project you're passionate about, you realize that all the wait was worth it.
Acting is such a beautiful and human profession. To get to be in someone else's shoes and explore different extensions of the human experiences is a lot of fun, and it also teaches you to be compassionate towards others. Also, acting is like playing. We are almost like little children on stage just having fun and playing to be in realities alternative to ours. To never lose one's essence of being a child and be able to play like one is just amazing. I personally want to be like Peter Pan and never grow up!
What would you like to see more in your industry? What is it lacking/needing?
I would like to see more diversity, both in the industry in Dominican Republic and here in New York. Times have changed, and more people believe equality is the goal and that together we are stronger. I want to see more opportunities for foreigners and more women in the industry. I'm so happy to be part of the generation where women can put their foot down if needed and are more independent than ever, and I am sorry guys for what I'm about to say but, we don't need you! We are capable of doing everything and anything on our own while feeling strong, independent and confident. I am grateful for my parents for raising me up with this mentality and for always making me feel that I am enough.
What piece of advice would you give any Latinx reading this who might want to pursue a career in the performing arts?
DO IT! JUST DO IT!
Don't listen to any negative comments and just do what your heart is telling you to do. As anything in this life, it won't be easy. It isn't pretty at first, but once you make it you'll feel so proud of yourself for following your dreams. There's nothing in this world more rewarding than doing what you love, and remember that most of the people who are telling you not to do something wished they had your courage.
Where do you see yourself in the next 3 years?
I see myself making my Broadway debut. I can see it coming! I believe that positive thinking attracts good things faster, so you have to strongly believe in yourself in order to see something happen.
¡Dinos un poco acerca de ti!
Mi nombre es Diana Carolina Pou Ortiz y soy una cantante, actriz, bailarina y música Dominicana actualmente viviendo en Nueva York.
Estudié en la Academia Musical y Dramática donde recibí un certificado en su programa Integrado. Luego asistí al Estudio de William Esper donde me pasé dos años en su programa de Actuación Profesional y en Steps on Broadway, donde también cursé su Programa de Estudio Independiente.
Me encantan los lugares al aire libre como la playa y el parque y todo lo que le de fuerzas a mi espíritu, lo cual normalmente incluye largas caminatas, aire fresco, yoga y el teatro, para mencionar algunos. Recientemente me he interesado en actividades más extremas como el boxeo, fencing y escalar. Siempre he querido ser parte de una película de acción, ya que tengo una pasión escondida por las armas de pelea.
¿De dónde crees que viene tu amor por el canto y la actuación?
Desde que era muy pequeña mi mamá sabía que estaba destinada a las artes.
Una Navidad mi abuelo me regaló un piano de juguete que desde el momento que estaba en mis manos lo llevaba conmigo a todas partes. Era tanto mi apego que hasta dormía con el piano como si fuese un peluche, así que era bastante obvio que la música era parte de mi desde bien pequeña. Mi mamá solía cantarme antes de llevarme a la cama a dormir y a mi papá encantaba cantar boleros durante las reuniones familiares. La música ya estaba en mi sangre.
Comencé lecciones de piano y canto a los 6 años en la Escuela Elemental de Música "Elila Mena" y luego continúe en el Conservatorio Nacional De Música Nacional de la República Dominicana. La actuación, por otro lado, no pasó hasta más después en mi vida. Tenía 17 años cuando fui elegida para interpretar el papel estelar en la producción de Nuryn Sanlley’s de High School Musical, interpretando a Gabriella Montez, para luego darme cuenta lo mucho que me gustaba cantar y actuar. Seguido de este proyecto me mudé a Nueva York en el 2008 para perseguir mis sueños en grande y aquí estoy: Amando mi carrera cada día más!
¿Cuál es la parte más difícil y la más satisfactoria de tu trabajo?
La parte más difícil de mi trabajo es la generalmente larga espera para ser descubierta o apreciada como artista. Es una carrera bastante dura y hay mucha competencia, así que de verdad te tiene que gustar y tienes que poseer mucha paciencia. Tienes que audicionar constantemente y no importa lo que cueste siempre dar lo mejor de ti. Pero una vez eres descubierta o te eligen para un proyecto que te apasiona, te das cuenta rápidamente que la espera valió la pena.
La actuación es una profesión súper hermosa y humana. El poder experimentar estar en los zapatos de otras personas y explorar diferentes experiencias humanas es bien interesante y divertido y algo que también te enseña a tener mucha compasión hacia los demás. También, la actuación es como un juego. Somos casi niños en un escenario divirtiéndonos y jugando a vivir en realidades alternas. El hecho de que generalmente como actores no perdemos la esencia de ser niño es increíble. Yo personalmente quiero ser como Peter Pan, y nunca crecer.
¿Qué te gustaría ver más en la industria del arte? Qué crees que está faltando y/o se necesita más?
Me gustaría ver más diversidad, tanto en la industria Dominicana como aquí en Nueva York. Los tiempos han cambiado y más y más personas creen en la igualdad y en el hecho de que juntos somos más fuertes. Me da mucha felicidad formar parte de una generación donde las mujeres pueden negarse a muchas cosas si les parece y donde son más independientes que nunca, y me da hasta lástima cuando digo esto a los hombres, pero ya no los necesitamos! Somos capaces de hacer todo solas mientras también nos sentimos felices y con confianza. Estaré por siempre agradecida de mis padres por criarme con esta mentalidad que aquí describo, y siempre asegurarse de que yo supiera y me creyera que yo soy suficiente.
¿Qué consejo le darías a unx Latinx leyendo esto que quiera perseguir una carrera en las artes escénicas?
¡Hazlo! ¡Lánzate!
No escuches a los comentarios negativos y simplemente sigue a tu corazón. Como todo en la vida, no será fácil. No es muy lindo al inicio pero una vez veas resultados vas a sentir un enorme orgullo por haber perseguido tus sueños. No hay nada en este mundo más satisfactorio que poder hacer lo que amas y recuerda que la mayoría de la gente diciéndote que no hagas algo que vale la pena quisieran tener tu valentía.
¿Dónde te ves en los próximos 3 años?
Me veo haciendo mi debut en Broadway. Lo puedo ver llegar! Creo firmemente que pensar positivamente ahogar las cosas positivas más rápido, así que tienes que creer en ti con todo lo que tienes para que puedas ver tus metas realizarse.
