I know that a lot of you readers are based in the island, but for those who like me live in the States or visit often, I thought it was about time made a more comprehensive post about traveling.
I hope you read and enjoyed some of the travels I have been documenting in hola, rita; like Baltimore, Chicago, Maine and Arizona, and that not only did you perhaps like the pictures or insights, but that it actually made you want to travel.
But you might be wondering, how was I able to travel to so many places while being a recent graduate? Here's how: smart-travel friends like Chelsea, and planning. Tons of planning.
Every time we started planning to trips we always needed to answer these three extremely important questions: how much would it cost to get there, are there any affordable lodging options (hellooo Hostels!) and will we need a car.
At the beginning, we always chose places we could reach by bus. As you’ll soon notice, that is often, although not glamorous, the cheapest way to get anywhere. Second we looked into lodging, which tends to be the hardest part for folks like us without family or friends in these cities, but the answer was quite simple: Hostels! We are young, flexible and won't really be spending time at the hotel, so why not? We've had such an amazing time with Hosteling International that to be honest we have been planning most if not all of our trips around their locations for years now.
They are cheap, clean and conveniently located, which brings me to the third consideration on my list: Transportation.
When traveling on a budget it is worth it to pick cities that have an accessible transportation system so you can hit all of the key places without needing a car. I often rave about Baltimore because it was just so cheap and easy to get to the key places, plus we saved so much money that taking an uber after hitting some bars was not a big deal.
As I write this I think of one more thing: Have fun, I mean it. Plan your trip so that you spend the least in the usually expensive parts of traveling so that you can visit museum, eat great food and have one too many drinks. Be curious, ask questions and say hi to locals. It makes me smile to remember the absolutely great memories I've created all over the country and trust me when I tell you, you can too. And you totally should!
Sé que muchos/as de ustedes los y las lectores y lectoras están basados en la isla, pero para aquellos/as que viven en Nueva York y los Estados Unidos o que pueden visitar son regularidad, creo que ya era tiempo de que escribiera un post concentrado en viajar.
Espero que hayan leído y disfrutado los pasados posts en los cuales he documentado mi viajes a Baltimore, Chicago, Maine y Arizona, y que no sólo les agradaran sino que también los motivaran a querer viajar también.
Pero sé que tal vez te has preguntado, ¿cómo es que pude viajar a tantos sitios como una recién graduada? Aquí el secreto: Mi súper viajera mejor amiga Chelsea y mucha planificación.
Cada vez que comenzábamos a planear un viaje teníamos que responder y considerar las siguientes importantes preguntas: cuánto costaba llegar al lugar, existen opciones de alojamiento económicas (¡hola Hostales!) y por último, si era necesario o no un vehículo para conocer el lugar.
Para nuestros primeros viajes siempre elegíamos lugares a los que pudiésemos llegar en bus desde Nueva York, mayormente porque siempre era la opción, aunque nunca glamourosa, pero sí más económica.
En segundo lugar mirábamos las opciones de alojamiento, lo cual tiende a muchas veces ser lo más difícil de viajar cuando no se tiene una familia o amigo en la ciudad en cuestión, pero lo que generalmente tiene una respuesta muy simple: Hostales! Somos jóvenes, flexibles y no vamos a pasar casi nada de tiempo en el hotel, así que por qué no? Tenemos tantas buenas experiencias con Hosteling International que hasta este día hemos planeado casi todos los viajes alrededor de sus locaciones. Son súper económicos, limpios y casi siempre localizados en el centro de la ciudad lo cual ayuda con la tercera consideración: Transporte.
Cuando viajes con un presupuesto limitado es ideal que escojas una ciudad con un buen sistema de transporte y en la cual no necesites un carro para poder ir a todos los lugares importantes. Si hablas conmigo de viajes es probable que mencione Baltimore ya que fue verdaderamente económico moverse y ya que ahorramos tanto dinero no fue la gran cosa cuando tuvimos que tomar uno o dos taxis, especialmente luego de visitar algunos bares.
Pero mientras escribo todo esto me doy cuenta que se me olvido lo más importante: Diviértete, de verdad. Planea tu viaje para gastar lo menos que puedas en lo que generalmente es más caro y así puedas invertir en museos, buena comida y hasta par de tragos. Sé curioso/a, haz muchas preguntas y saluda a los locales. Siempre me hace sonreír recordarme de las memorias tan geniales que he creado por todo el país y créeme cuando te digo que tú también puedes hacerlo.
