The Hola, Rita Team Shares Their First and Favorite Trips

Hola, Rita is made up of a wonderful team of women, whose experiences and stories make the site what it is today. We recently asked some of them to talk about both their first trips as ‘adults’ - which would be the first trip they took on their own or with friends without family - and their favorite trip. Picking their favorite one was actually a struggle, which is why we’re so excited to share the below experiences with you.

 

DAHIANA - SANTIAGO, DR

First trip as an adult: When we were in college, and group of friends and I tossed a dice to decide which city in the north of the Dominican Republic we would go backpacking to. The only condition was that none of us could have been in that place before. Once decided, we took the public transportation. We were unemployed and without vehicles.

The selected city was Santa Barbara de Samaná, so we grabbed the backpacks and left without a hotel reservation and no idea what we were going to find there. Unlike the typical Dominican tourism where you only visit beaches and hotels, we toured the town. When we got there, we ate at a picapollo, we walked the all over, we helped paint a mural, we followed stories of a local lodge, we danced the Macarena in a Helados Bon, and we played in the park swings until ten at night. We got to know a charming town with friendly people, and we paid 100 pesos each for a room with air conditioning and two beds. It was definitely one of the most fun trips I've done, and I think one of the reasons why I kept traveling.

Favorite trip: I confess it was really hard to pick my favorite trip, but a place I always return to is Villa Pajón, Constanza.

I like the mountain a lot, and disconnecting from time to time is great for one’s mental health. In Villa Pajón yo breath peace and tranquility, and if you go with a group of friends it can be very entertaining. Apart from that, you can go hiking, biking or do some ecotourism through Valle Nuevo.

Now, I can’t leave aside my trip to Italy, where we toured Rome, Florence, and Venice. Italy is a country full of history, art and a cuisine that has dominated the world. Going during the summer can be exhausting because of the heat, and if you have my luck, the train breaks down so they have to open the windows so you can breathe. However, walking the streets of these cities, eat gelato or at a restaurant with a terrace and fans with ice, it's quite lovely.
 

CATHERINE, SANTIAGO, DR (BUT CURRENTLY IN BARCELONA, SPAIN)

First trip as an adult: Although I had gone camping without my parents as a kid, there where always adults to watch over us. So my first real experience by myself was volunteering for TECHO, it was December 2011, me and my best friend went to a Batey in San Pedro de Macoris and all we knew was that we were going to help build houses for families that lived in very poor conditions. It was a life-changing experience where I got to familiarize with a side of the Dominican Republic we know exists but rarely get to experience it and fully grasp the reality more than half the country lives in and I got to meet amazing people that have become great friends.

Favorite trip: One of the trips I hold closest to my heart was to Elias Piña. This trip was also an adventure because it was only me and another person from Santiago. We didn't know where we were going to sleep or what exactly we were going to do and we also had very little money.

We joined the rest of the group in Santo Domingo and headed out getting to know each other along the way. We got there almost at midnight and immediately went to sleep. The next day we woke up before dawn and were greeted by spectacular views on our way to a community where they weren’t any TVs and the nearest school was hours away. Then we split up and had a local tour guide that kindly took us in his motor to explore different communities where we spoke with the locals, heard their stories and shared food. These are the definitely the kind of experiences I want to collect.

CARMEN - NYC, U.S.

First trip as an adult: It was my second year in college in NYC and a group of friends and myself decided to visit Washington, DC. We found a super affordable hostel - a first for most of us - and took a bus down there. We ended up sleeping in a room with about 10 other women in bunk beds. The only thing I regretted was not taking ear plugs with me! The hostel was located in a great part of town so we walked everywhere including many free museums and monuments. We fell in love with the hostel, the vibe, and the free breakfast, so much so that I’ve been to at least 3 more hostels of the same company with. It is an experience I cannot recommend enough.

Favorite trip: Although I loved my trip to Arizona, one of my favorite trips to this day was with a similar group of friends but to San Francisco, California. It was my first time traveling west. We were seniors (or almost seniors) in college and we packed a long weekend with so many awesome activities and places to visit in town. We walked around so much we got to really know the city center, ate incredible seafood and tacos and even got drunk in Napa while on a wine tasting tour because what else is there to do there!? I often say that if someone asks me to pay double what we paid to have the same trip I would - and this is still true.

Hace poco le pedimos a algunas de ellas que compartieran su primer viaje como adultas - dígase uno que hicieron con sus amigos o solas y sin familia - y su favorito. Elegir el favorito se les hizo un poco difícil todas, y por esto y más nos causa emoción compartir sus historias contigo.

 

DAHIANA - SANTIAGO, RD

Primer viaje como adultx: cuando estábamos en la universidad, un grupo de amigos y yo tiramos los dados para decidir a qué ciudad del norte del país nos iríamos a mochilear.  La única condición era que ninguno de nosotros hubiera estado antes en el lugar. Una vez decidido, tomamos el transporte público que nos llevaría (estábamos desempleados y sin vehículos).

La ciudad seleccionada fue Santa Barbara de Samaná, así que cogimos las mochilas y nos fuimos sin reserva de hotel, ni idea de lo que íbamos a encontrar. A diferencia del típico turismo que se hace de playas y hoteles, nosotros recorrimos el pueblo. Cuando llegamos allá, comimos en un picapollo, caminamos la ciudad, ayudamos a pintar un mural, seguimos historias de una logia, bailamos la macarena en un Helados Bon y jugamos en los columpios del parque hasta las 10 de la noche. Nos encontramos con un pueblo muy bonito y gente muy amable, y pagamos 100 pesos cada uno por una habitación con aire acondicionado y dos camas. Definitivamente uno de los viajes más divertidos y aperos que he hecho. Creo que por esa experiencia seguí viajando.

Viaje favorito: Confieso que hay una pelea en mi lista de viajes y lugares favoritos, pero un lugar al que siempre regreso es Villa Pajón, Constanza.

Me gusta mucho la montaña, y desconectarse de vez en cuando es bueno para la salud mental. En Villa Pajón se respira paz, tranquilidad y si vas con un grupo de amigos es muy entretenido. A parte de que se puede hacer senderismo, montar bicicleta o hacer ecoturismo por Valle Nuevo.

Ahora bien, no puedo dejar de lado mi viaje a Italia, donde recorrimos tres ciudades como fueron Roma, Florencia y Venecia. Italia es un país lleno de historia, arte y una cultura culinaria que ha dominado al mundo. Ir en verano puede ser agotador por el calor que hace, más si como me pasó a mí, se daña el tren y tienen que abrir las ventanillas para poder respirar. Sin embargo, caminar por las calles de estas ciudades, comer gelato o en un restaurante con terraza y ventiladores con hielo, es bastante agradable.
 

CATHERINE - SANTIAGO, RD (PERO ACTUALMENTE EN BARCELONA, ESPAÑA)

Primer viaje como adultx: Aunque ya había ido a acampar sin mis padres cuando era niña, siempre habían adultos cuidando de mí. Mi primera experiencia sola fue durante el inicio de mi voluntariado con TECHO en diciembre del 2011.

Mi mejor amiga y yo fuimos a un Batey en San Francisco de Macorís y lo único que sabíamos era que íbamos a ayudar a construir viviendas para familias que vivían en la pobreza extrema. Esa experiencia me cambió la vida totalmente. mM permitió familiarizarme con el lado de República Dominicana que todos sabemos que existe pero rara vez podemos experimentarlo y comprender la realidad en la que vive más de la mitad del país. Allí también conocí personas que se convirtieron en buenos amigos.

Viaje favorito: Uno de los viajes que llevo siempre en el corazón fue a Elías Piña. Este viaje también fue una aventura porque de Santiago solo iba yo y otra persona. No sabíamos donde dormiríamos ni que haríamos exactamente y teníamos poco dinero.

Nos juntamos con el resto del grupo en Santo Domingo y empezamos la ruta conociéndonos en el camino, llegamos casi a media noche y todos nos fuimos a dormir. Al otro día nos levantamos antes del amanecer y pudimos disfrutar de unas vistas espectaculares de camino a una comunidad donde no tenían televisores y la escuela más cercana estaba a horas de distancia. Luego separamos el grupo y un guía local amablemente nos llevó en su motor a conocer diferentes comunidades donde hablamos con los locales, escuchamos sus historias y compartimos comida. Estas son definitivamente las experiencias que deseo coleccionar.

CARMEN - NYC, E.E.U.U.

Primer viaje como adulta: Era mi segundo año en la universidad en Nueva York y un grupo de amigas y yo decidimos visitar Washington, DC. Encontramos un hostal súper barato - el primer alojamiento de ese tipo de nosotras- y tomamos un autobús allí. Terminamos durmiendo en una habitación con otras 10 mujeres en camarotes. ¡Lo único que lamenté fue no llevar tapones para los oídos! El hostal estaba en una parte de la ciudad bien chevere, así que pudimos caminamos a todas partes, incluyendo muchos museos gratuitos y monumentos. La verdad es que nos enamoramos del hostal, el ambiente y el desayuno gratis, tanto así que he estado en al menos 3 hostales más de la misma compañía. Es una experiencia que no puedo recomendar lo suficiente.
 

Viaje favorito: Aunque me encantó mi viaje a Arizona, uno de mis viajes favoritos hasta este día fue con un grupo similar de amigas, pero a San Francisco, California. Fue la primera vez que viajé al oeste de los E.E.U.U.. Éramos seniors (o casi seniors) en la universidad y planificamos un fin de semana largo con muchísimas actividades increíbles y lugares para visitar en la ciudad. Caminamos tanto que llegamos a realmente conocer el centro de la ciudad, comimos mariscos y tacos increíbles e incluso nos emborrachamos en Napa catando vinos porque, ¿qué más hay que hacer allí? A menudo digo que si alguien me pide que pague el doble de lo que pagamos para hacer el mismo viaje, lo haría, y esto sigue siendo cierto.
