ROCIOART x ARTBYJAR Dreamworld
Rocio is someone you’ll likely never forget meeting. Her energy is electric, her vibe colorful and her art both real and otherworldly. I met Rocio back in 2016 when I interviewed her for the Dominican Writers Association, and have been keeping up with her and her work ever since.
This past Saturday, December 9th, she teamed up with visual and tattoo artist, Jar, to take us to their Dream World without even leaving the island Manhattan. From clouds adorning the tall ceilings and art installations to local vendors and cold beers, this event was an opportunity to step into the artists minds and the colorful, eclectic, and unique worlds they often depict in their pieces.
More than an opportunity to relax and let loose surrounded by art, and perhaps the coolest exhibit of makeup looks I have ever seen in person, the party offered the chance for the attendees to support Uptown artists - something I know Rocio to be very passionate about.
The event was also a testament to the growing number of the businesses and collectives owned by women and people of color that are ideating and executing opportunities for our own communities to support each other.
Rocio es alguien muy difícil de olvidar una vez la conoces. Su energía es eléctrica, su aura colorida y su arte tanto real como lleno de fantasía. Conocí a Rocio en el 2016 cuando le hice una entrevista para la Asociación de Escritores Dominicanos, y desde ese entonces vengo siguiendo el desarrollo de su arte.
Este pasado Sábado 9 de Diciembre, la artista se unió con Jar, otra artista y tatuadora, para dejarnos entrar a su Dream World sin dejar la isla de Manhattan. Desde nubes que adornaban los altos techos e instalaciones de arte hasta vendedores locales y cervezas, el evento fue una oportunidad para ver muchos de los intereses y la manera de pensar de ambas artistas.
Más que una oportunidad para relajarnos y botar el golpe rodeadxs de arte, y lo que para mí también fue una de las exposiciones de maquillajes más chéveres que he visto con estos ojos, la fiesta también nos permitió apoyar artistas del Alto Manhattan, algo que sé que a Rocío le apasiona mucho.
El evento también fue un testamento del número cada vez más grande de negocios y colectivas de mujeres y personas de color que están ideando y organizando oportunidades para nuestra comunidad poder apoyarse a sí misma.
